Academic and Teaching Support System

SMA Labschool UPI, Excellent academically, socially and religiously. On August 4, 2003, there was a crucial moment in which SMA and SMP Korpri became part of  Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The name of it was also turned into SMA Labschool UPI and located right in the heart of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. On October 20, 2003, SMA Labschool UPI was officially opened by the education minister of Indonesia.

The School director, Dr. Prayoga Bestari, M.Si said that SMA Labschool is a teaching school or demonstration school for Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Therefore, it is expected to make it as one lab meaning that it will have one management, one system, one curriculum and one bank to manage it well.

SMA Labschool UPI has also three different programs such as Tauhid, Bilingual and Regular program. Tauhid Program is a collaboration program with Daarut Tauhid to provide teaching and learning processes focusing on religious matters preparing students to compete in this globalization era. Meanwhile, the Bilingual program offers an international science curriculum combined with a national curriculum. It also offers the mastery of English and Japanese literacy helping students to compete in a 4.0 digital atmosphere especially with the mastery of language. The last one is a regular program using a national curriculum enriched with an enhanced curriculum set by the school. It is intended to get students ready for the future that they will face soon when they graduate.

Apart from the program that the school developed, it also has many great facilities such as a representative and strategic location of the school which is conducive for teaching and learning process, comfortable classroom completed with air-conditioner, impressive computer laboratory, science laboratory, digital laboratory, library, indoor field, consultation room, mushola, lift, lobby, canteen, pool, cctv, hot spot area for internet connection.

B. PEDAGOGICAL CONTENTS

Teaching methods of the teacher that observed

SMA Labschool UPI has three different programs such as Tauhid, Bilingual and Regular program. On the first few days of our observation period we were assigned to the Regular class of Grade 10 students, but since the regular class is using their local dialect which is Bahasa Indonesia, we find it hard to understand the discussion and collaboration inside the classroom, so our respective cooperating teaching, Ma'am Lissiana transferred us to the Bilingual class that uses two language - Bahasa Indonesia and English during class discussion.

During our observation, both Regular and Bilingual programs undergo the same process of teaching methods. First the teacher will ask something about an idea or any related issues about to the lesson, just like the Corona Virus or other viral disease as an introduction for virus as what we observed. With this students will share some of their knowledge and experience about it that shows a collaborative and interactive learning. Then the teacher will show a short video clip to students regarding the topic, adjusting to the level of thinking of the students. The regular class has a video in Bahasa Indonesia, while the Bilingual class has a video in English with subtitles. After the video, that's the time where the formal discussion begins, and the teacher will continuously engage students to the discussion by asking them several questions that also aim to acquire knowledge.

Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge how the teacher adjusts for the comfort of the students' learning environment, in terms of groupings and even in the process of learning itself.

The learning materials and innovation

I actually envy the students and am amazed by the school on how they run their academy. Students have their own hardbound book of the latest and good quality books for today's learning. Also, I've been to four sections during my stay in SMA Labschool UPI, and each class has a locker where they can put their personal belongings. Another thing is that in a classroom there are only 20-25 students, fully airconditioned, with an elevator in each floor, and students have free access to their laboratories, computers, literary works, library, publications, and even a school-wide free internet connection.

Sources of learning and technology used by the teachers

I was informed that Indonesia is practically above when it comes to technology, and I witnessed it with my own eyes. Each classroom has an automated LCD Projector, speaker, and computer monitor used by teachers during lesson proper. The faculty room is even equipped with shelves of books, and each faculty has a monitor where they can use it for gathering and preparing lessons. In addition, when unavailability or dysfunction of equipment occur, the teacher provides alternative instructional materials like printed copies or QR codes for students to access using their cellular phones connected to the internet of the school premises.

Authentic assessment used by the teachers

The teacher mostly used a collaborative way of assessing student's learning through groupings, reporting, role play, projects, and experiments. Since there are just 20-25 students per classroom, students are able to fully adhere and authentically show their potential and capabilities in different aspects or fields of assessments.

C. TEACHING PLAN

Curriculum

Curriculum 2013 has been implemented since it is nominated as the national curriculum in 2013 in Indonesia. The curriculum then has been enriched with enhanced curriculum which makes it different from other schools.

SMA Labschool UPI has implemented curriculum 2013 enriched with enhanced curriculum preparing students to be competitive and ready to be part of 4.0 global citizens.

Teaching plan related to your major

This is the sample teaching plan used by my cooperating teacher.

This is the teaching plan I used for my teaching practicum.

D. TEACHING PRACTICE

Procedures of teaching

Based on the lesson plan I prepared and approved by my mentor and cooperating teacher, I first had an attendance, then a little conversation and greetings to my students, since I'll be teaching in pure English, I need to comprehend and understand how they internalize things inside the classroom. Then reviewing the previous lesson and learning.

Before proceeding to the lesson, I had a little game called 'Bring Me'. Here I asked students to bring me some materials that are related to the topic, which is Global Warming. I asked them to bring me some tumbler, tissue, eco bags, paper bags, bamboo products, paper cups, etc, then I asked them what they've observed about the things I asked them, and they figured out that those things are eco-friendly materials, and that's how I started introducing global warming. I asked them some ideas they know about global warming and students actively shared some of it, then I let them watch a short video clip about global warming like how their subject teacher used to do.

As I discuss the lesson about global warming, particularly the definition, causes, effects, mitigation, and adaptation, students are actively engaging since this topic is a global issue. There is also a student who has his own perspective about the cause of global warming, saying that it is just a conspiracy and asking me where did the scientist get such information, and with all the knowledge I got, I think I answered him respectfully. I ended my lesson by asking some reflective questions that they sincerely and honestly answered.

Right after the discussion period, I handed them the 'Global Warming Bingo Card', students told me that it is new to them so I instructed them carefully about the game. Since the bingo card is filled with student oriented global warming mitigation and adaptation activities, I instruct them to find their classmate who is doing that particular activity. Afterwards, we talked about their answers and at that time, they discovered their classmates who are doing this and that through the bingo card.

Lastly, I ended my time by showing them an innovative scientific video towards global warming made by my university and some quotations and words of wisdom that students will ponder.

Time management and organizing activities

What I like about SMA Labschool UPI is that they are really into the students welfare, no pressure, just taking your time. Each subject has an allotted time of 80 minutes twice a week, so I really had a smooth time to execute the lesson properly, organizely, and clearly. From the introduction, up to ice breakers, lesson proper, generalization, assessment and evaluation still involves a collaborative and interactive method of learning that is much needed to 21st century learners.

Classroom management

Since there are just 20-25 students, I didn't have a bad and long time connecting and catching up with them. I was familiarized with their names, faces, and personality for a short period of time. Additionally, SMA Labschool students are respectful, disciplined, and thoughtful to their elders, especially to their teachers. They call me Miss Joy, and whenever I enter the classroom they will immediately go back to their seats and even help me with my things and setting up my instructional materials. Even though I am a foreigner to them, they still share their warm smiles, ideas, thoughts, and trust with me.

Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school

None at all, maybe at first we were assigned to the regular class that uses pure Bahasa Indonesia dialect, but then with the sincere concern of our cooperating teacher, Ma'am Lissiana, she transferred us to the Bilingual class for us to be more convenient in our stay and practicum for the whole duration of this program. Thank you so much SMA Labschool UPI!

E. SUMMARY AND SUGGESTIONS

Purposes of practicum

SEA Teacher Project or “Pre – Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia”  is a one big privelege for aspiring educators in Southeast Asia, and below are my personal purpose or objective as a SEA Teacher Project Participant:

A) Enhance my teaching skills to better engage and educate my students, fostering a more effective learning environment.

B) Cultivate a genuine interest in the social and cultural aspects of my students' lives, allowing me to connect with them on a deeper level and create a more inclusive classroom.

C) Strive for global competitiveness by continually upgrading my knowledge and skills, ensuring I stay at the forefront of educational trends and practices.

D) Embrace the opportunity to explore and adapt to the diverse global perspectives and interests that students bring to the learning environment, making the educational experience more enriching and inclusive.

Procedures of practicum

I first heard about this program when my senior educator had an overview about it, and since then I committed myself to joining this project. Below are the actual procedures I have been through for my whole journey as a SEA Teacher:

1)    I submitted my application form to my respective college.

2)    I had an interview with the school administration.

3)    I submitted the necessary documents to the receiving school in order to obtain a letter of acceptance.

4)    I embarked on a month-long journey to Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, where I engaged in activities such as class observation, teaching assistance, teaching practicum, and evaluation.

5)    I composed this blog as part of the requirements for this project, fulfilling all necessary criteria.

Outcomes of practicum

A) My exposure to intercultural activities has enriched my understanding of the diverse cultures in various nations, enabling me to appreciate the differences.

B) Through my experiences, I've acquired effective strategies to address students' unique learning preferences in a more efficient manner.

C) This journey has taught me the importance of continuous learning in my chosen career. Stepping out of my comfort zone has revealed that there's always more to discover and a greater appreciation for what I have right now.

D) I've cultivated greater independence and resilience, learning to stand firmly on my own feet amid the ever-changing nature of life, as change remains the only constant in this world.

The challenges of practicum

As a first timer abroad, especially as a student, it might be the first challenge I overcome. I don't have any experience but the only thing I am holding on to is determination to face this journey, and now that the journey has ended, I can say that I think I did a great job overcoming this undeniable exciting journey I had.

Second, we can't change the fact that language is a big barrier we need to overcome wherever we go. At first it is not easy since not most of the people can understand what you are trying to say, but with the most common denominator that gives understanding to this undeniable problem is respect, people will respect you whoever you are, whatever you are. With the warm smile in the midst of misunderstanding is a clear view on how people respect you despite your differences in races and beliefs.

Overall impression

I am more than satisfied, more than fulfilled by this program, and now I can't get enough. It's been a week since I went back to my country, but here I am still curling with the memories I had on this program. Thank you SEAMEO for this very unforgettable and memorable experience I had, this is something I will hold onto forever as an educator. Now that I have taken another footstep, I am again fully determined to 'lead through learning' with the knowledge, experience, and wisdom I gained, in all possible ways that I can.

Suggestions for future improvement

If I were to borrow one of the SEA Teacher's mentors in UPI, "I think one month is not enough to fully adhere to this program, let's make this program longer for a more enjoyable and fruitful experience for our SEA Teachers", and I think I would be seconded.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
